鋼のフレンチト-スト
Yield: 6 portions
1 c.
dark brown sugar
1/2 c.
butter
2 T.
light corn syrup
12 ea.
slices white bread, crusts trimmed
1 1/2 c. whole
milk
6 ea.
eggs
1 t.
vanilla
1/4 t.
salt
Combine butter, sugar and corn
syrup in a heavy saucepan over medium heat. Cook until butter is
dissolved and sugar has melted, stirring occasionally. Bring to a
boil. Pour into 9 x 13 x 2 baking dish, turning to coat the sides.
Allow to cool.
Whisk together milk, eggs,
vanilla and salt. Set aside.
Arrange six pieces of bread over
cooled butter & sugar mixture. Pour half of egg and milk mixture over
bread, lay down remaining bread slices, pour remaining egg mixture over
everything. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Bake uncovered until bread is golden and puffy or an inserted knife comes
out clean, approx. 40 to 50 mins. Allow to rest for five minutes, turn
out upside down, cut into slices and serve.
Note from GG:
So who said that you can't learn anything from anime? I never did, and
neither should anyone else. This recipe was pulled directly from
episode 20something of Hagane no Renkinjutsu (Fullmetal Alchemist), and thus
I gave it the name "Hagane no French Toast." I have no idea who wrote
this or where it may have come from originally, but if I did, I'd totally
give them credit because it puts a whole new twist on french toast.
Basically, the sugar/butter mix that you pour in the baking dish will become
your syrup (and could easily be gussied up with the addition of some maple
flavouring), the bread will soak up all liquid by sitting overnight (thus
yielding a fluffy but firm texture) and it would come out looking way
fancier than the usual "triangles and powdered sugar" that we've all grown
accustomed to. My only suggestion would be to find a fairly hearty
bread to use here, like an Pullman or potato bread, so that it doesn't break
down overnight. (Your Wonder Bread can stay right where it is, ready
for use in something more suitable, like a bologna sandwich with American
cheese and Miracle Whip.) This is the only recipe that I've not tested
yet, but it *looks* totally viable. I wouldn't doubt that it'd come
out just fine. がんばってね!
